Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon

Race Reports

On Saturday July 2nd myself and Mark Lamonby headed off for a weekend in Weymouth to compete in the Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon, this was a training exercise to see where we were in preparation for the European Championships in Austria this September.

So Sunday started very early @4.30am (pity we had a late night watching Germans on penalties!!) getting a good breakfast in prep for an early 7am 1.2 mile swim in the beautiful Weymouth bay, the conditions were ideal, very calm and crystal clear sea with the odd jelly fish to avoid but no rain just overcast , the swim went well for us both, I finished in 33 mins, Mark 35 mins, and both of us 3rd in our age groups, following on with the bike, 56 miles of undulating single lap bike course again just overcast on the weather front, I had a great bike passing quite a few people and holding on to 3rd in my age, 9th overall, Mark also had a good bike holding onto his 3rd in age and 19th overall, the bike was a beautiful scenic rolling course, then came the run, I started out strong doing first 6 miles in 40mins however paid the price doing the 2nd lap dropping pace and being caught by young Mark at 10 miles. I finished the run in 1.39, Mark finished very strong with a 1.33 run, all this after 56 miles of solid biking. Overall I finished 14th overall and 3rd for my age in 4.57, Mark a very good 12th and 3rd in his age group.

The race was very tough but was well organised and a great area.

This boded well for our confidence in prep for the European Championships in September.
