Elan 10 mile road race

Nominally a road race, but such a remote road with fantastic mountain views it hardly felt monotonous until perhaps the last two miles. Sharply downhill to start from lakeside scenery, the hills bit at mile 3 as we skirted the mountain. Many undulations later it finished with a fairly flat 3 miles at the Visitor’s Centre.

If you’re not at the front, the queue for the coffee shop will be too long, and there is no water offered at the finish. If your own supplies don’t hold up, a two minute drive into Rhyader gives you The Strand coffee shop, with free tap water, huge mugs of coffee and squishy sofas to relax in with a view of the clock tower.

I struggled, convinced I was having a heart attack, but came in 1:34, 56th (77 women) which was actually a pleasant surprise. Frank sailed along, finishing 53rd male in 1:15.
