The first club championship race saw 5 of the (male) committee members who helped choose it, put their feet where their mouth was (that sounds like a gaffe – maybe it was, had we realised beforehand!) and with 4 other Crofties, they joined 69 runners in a very soft field. Once out of the field, we started on the road climb (a fell race, on roads, you may ask?) which got steeper and steeper until we were directed up a wet, leafy gully (even steeper than the road) and then a steadier climb up to the trig point, where we turned round into a fierce headwind, and descended as fast as our legs would carry us down the same route. Simon who was in 4th spot at the top had to settle for 9th, but was rewarded with 1st MV40, behind winner Chris Jones, whose long legs carried him home in 27 mins 22 secs. Sam M (13th) had a great run, crossing the line in 31.53, 12 seconds ahead of Mark L (who was supposedly recuperating from a minor op). Pat (21st) would probably have been first over 45, had there been an award. It was good to see Jordan (28th, 34.22) running again, finishing a couple of minutes ahead of a timid Dave A (44th), experiencing his first fell race. Having battled with Frank (55th, 39.07) most of the way up, I just had the edge over him on the way down, 2 places ahead in 38.58. Tom (71st, 42.51) played it safe on the steep descents.
