Leinthall Starkes Handicap race 3

News

The  3rd  and  final  race  on  the  road  before  we  head  for  Croft  Woods  was  again  well  supported  despite  the  inclement  weather  and  the  counter  attractions  of  the  Queen’s  Jubilee  celebrations  and  half  term  week.  Ben  has  been  struggling  to  train  recently  due  to  a  niggling  injury  but  was  determined  to  beat  his  previous  best  time  over  the  old  course.  He  succeeded  and crossed  the  finish  line  first  with  a  big  improvement.  His  quest  was  energised  and  galvanised  by  the  presence  of  the  fashion  police  who  were  in  hot  pursuit (see  photo)  –  surely  his  lamentable  attempt  to  set  a  new  trend  in  running  garb  is  doomed  to  failure.  Stacey  followed  him  across  the  line  and  just  managed  to  break  the  30  minute  barrier  as  he  continued  his  endeavour  to  overcome  his  undermining  foot  injury.  Ruth  finished  third  but  had  to  dig  deep  with  a  sprint  finish  to  fend  off  the  fast  closing  Adam, Martin  and  Patrick.  Adam  was  sufficiently  inspired  by  the  chase  to  knock  over  40  seconds  from  his  P.B.

Rob  performed  well  in  his  first  competitive  race  over  the  tough  Crocodile  8  course  yet  still  returned  2  days  later  to  set  another  best  time.  Dave  Ameghino, in  his  first  handicap  race  of  the  season, improved  his  best  time  by  a  single  second  to  consolidate  his  position  at  no.  20  on  the  all-time  fastest  runs  over  the  course.  This  was  the  only  addition  to  the  men’s  best  times  (see  list)  during  2012.  The  list  illustrates  that  6  of  the  top  8  times  were  set  over  20  years  ago  –  c’mon  lads  where  is  the  next  challenge  coming  from ?
The  female  best  times, thankfully, included  3  additions  to  the  top  20  courtesy  of  Irina, Liza  and  Sam.

There  is  a  gap  now  before  the  next  handicap  event  in  the  series  takes  place  in  Croft  Woods  over  a  shorter  course  (approx.  3  and  a  half  miles)  on  Tuesday  24th  July.  The  handicap  times  will  be  based  on  the  5  mile  times  adjusted  by  a  version  of  the  Duckworth-Lewis  method.
