Walkers outnumbered runners as we set off up the main street of Church Stretton, but fortunately the field soon spread out as the climbing began. Having forgotten my studs, I was glad the course largely kept to firm(ish) paths and offered the occasional alternative route through bracken and long grass. The disadvantage of this course though is the view you get of runners way ahead, even after only a mile. One of those lead runners was Simon, who finished an excellent 24th (37.40) in a competitive race which saw Steve Cale relegated to 4th place. Mark was close behind Simon in 32nd (38.35), and in Sue D’s sights as she finished 40th, 2nd LV45 (39.12) behind Val Swingler. Then it was the oldies – I was 62nd (41.09), Matt 84th (definitely not an oldie) (42.34), Gary 89th (42.52), Tom 100th (44.03), Neil 102nd (44.06), Ashley R (44.56) and Frank 114th (45.08), so between us we filled 2 of the first over 60 places, and the first 2 over 65. Bryan Lloyd ran as unattached (129th, 47.42) and Rachel successfully tested out her hip over a demanding 5 mile course, getting round in 54.12. May this be the start of her come-back!
