MULTI-EVENTS 2009

News

The ever-expanding club membership necessitated the first ever daytime running of the annual “Sports Day”. The weather was kind to us and the absence of multiple champion, Patrick, meant that a new male champion would be crowned at the end of the day.

The day’s proceedings opened in dramatic fashion at the Long Jump pit with both Dan and Nigel executing spectacular, though possibly foolhardy, rolling somersault exits from the sand-pit. Thankfully, no damage was done and Dan emerged with an early lead from Nigel and Dave R. Jnr. The female competition was a little more elegant with Natalie establishing an early lead over reigning champion ,Suzanne, with Sonia (tasting the delights of the event for the first time) in third place.

The gruelling 400 metres was the opening track race and Nigel stormed home to draw level on points with Dan, who just held off a battling Dave , to grab 2 nd. Place. Suzanne levelled the Female contest as she held off Natalie with Kim fighting her way to 3 rd.

Dan built up a big lead in the Shot Put with Martin demonstrating his strength to take 2 nd. with Jon 3 rd. Natalie produced a massive throw to win by a huge margin and open a points gap on her rivals. Kim continued her good form to place 2 nd., with Catherine 3 rd.

Nigel and Dan again battled their way down the 100 metres track with Nigel just getting the verdict in a club Multi-Events record time of 12.48. Congratulations Nigel on a superb performance. Gavin recorded the 3rd. fastest time to register his best position of the day. Natalie opened up a 4 point gap over Suzanne with a clear victory over the reigning champ. With Kim again posting another impressive 3rd. place.

The Javelin was the final field event and we were privileged to witness a dazzling display of spear-throwing as Dan hurled the missile to a distance of 41.15 metres to break the club record by over 6 metres. Suzanne launched the female javelin more delicately to win from Elaine and Nicky. Natalie failed to register a legitimate throw to leave Suzanne as a clear favourite to win the title.

The 1500 metres proved to be an exciting climax to the day’s sporting endeavours with Nigel, Dan and Dave disputing the lead every step of the way until Nigel unleashed a devastating finishing sprint to break the 5 minute barrier with Dave just holding off Dan to take 2nd. place. Suzanne smiled her way to a comfortable victory over Sonia , with Nicky in 3rd.

Dan was duly crowned Multi-Events champion 2009 with Suzanne defending her title as female champion.

Dave Rouse Snr. was rewarded for a solid and consistent display to take the Veteran’s trophy and Sonia just pipped Nicky for the female Veteran’s award.
