The Wales Long Course Weekend

News

On the 10th June I ran from Pembroke to Tenby, Wales, a half marathon which featured as part of the long course weekend. The whole weekend forms a triathlon with a swim on Friday (1.9K or 3.8K), bike ride Saturday (40, 72,or 112 miles) and run on Sunday (13.1 or 26.2 miles). To qualify for the Long Course medal you must compete in the longer distances (3.8K swim, 12 mile bike, 26.2 run). Good training for Ironman.

Race day was my most enjoyable to date, having run half marathons at Dymock, Hereford, Forest of Dean, Bristol, Bath and Cardiff. Runners for the full marathon started at 10am in Tenby and the half marathon started at 12pm in Pembroke, both finishing in Tenby. The half marathon runners congregated in Pembroke castle, supporters having free passes to the castle grounds. Then at approx 11:30 a Samba band headed the runners and paraded us through Pembroke to the start line.

Whilst this was not a PB course, with its tough hill climbs, it boasted some breath-taking scenery. I was supported through the race by a triathlete from Manchester (who had swum and biked but dropped down to the half marathon instead of competing the full) who decided that he liked my pace! Started off fast but naturally slowed with fatigue. The course is still developing with the half marathon having 706 entrants; I came 24th overall (4th female) in a time of 1:37:01 (winner 1:22:23 and first female 1:30:07). The course marshals were extremely friendly and the lady who placed my medal over my head followed this up with a hug! The final thing that topped off the event was having a splash in the sea afterwards! Great day and would recommend it to all!
