Muddy Woody

Race Reports

On a sunny but cold day last Sunday, several Croft Ambrey runners including me took part in the 20th anniversary of “Muddy Woody out in Haugh Woods. Whilst the race lived up to its “Muddy Woody” title a better name would be “Hilly Muddy Woody”!

To celebrate the 20th anniversary the race route was changed from previous years. Whilst muddy and woody the course was also incredibly hilly and the organisers had added in a killer hill within spitting distance of the finish line. The terrain varied from solid forestry roads and open fields to ankle deep mud sections and forest tracks with branches and roots to get in the way! This meant some sections were difficult to overtake as paths were narrow and you also had to keep your distance from other runners so you could see the terrain.

The course was well marked and marshalled, which is just as well as I would certainly have got lost without them – there were plenty of route twists and turns. It also seemed to go on forever – I made the mistake of asking a marshal how far was left only to learn I had only just covered about half the course!

Croft runners did well with Ashley Robinson once again picking up his age category award (his mantelpiece must be crowded!). Full results can be seen on the Wye Valley Runners website.

The race had sold out within 24 hours and attracts runners from all over the place (the ladies title went to a runner from Southampton) so if you fancy doing it you need to be quick when registration opens. I would certainly do it again, even if just as a stamina/hill training run.

  1. Well done to everyone who ran this, especially Toby, who sadly didn’t get a prize for first junior male. There are some photos on the Wye Valley Runners page, although as Steph pointed out to me, they were taken on the final killer hill – so we don’t look like we are enjoying it as much as we did!
