Pembrokeshire Coastal Half

Race Reports

After a week of hail, sleet and rain, the blue skies on the early morning drive down to beautiful Pembrokeshire were a welcome relief.
We arrived with a westerly coastal wind keeping us chilled but it was bright and sunny which was really amazing.
This coastal half marathon was organised by Endurance Life which is quite expensive to enter but really well organised. I travelled down with a friend who runs with the Hereford Ghost Runners.
We set off from Little Haven running along the stunning coastal path south towards St Brides Bay and Dale, did a circular route around the headland then made our way back along the same path in the opposite direction. It was undulating with some really steep ups and downs in places with not many overtaking places.
I thoroughly enjoyed myself, trotting along thinking how lucky I was to have my health and be able to run in such a beautiful part of Britain. A little bit of tarmac up a steepish hill at the start soon made me pull over and take my first layer off. Then stoney paths along the cliffs with grassy areas, some farm drives and along a pebble beach at one point. Lots of narrow areas where you had to watch your feet and some hazardous rocky areas where I did take a few tumbles! Not the most elegant either.
I first knew about this race about 5 years ago when I went to support Neil, Dave Ameghino and Simon Norwood who were all running the coastal marathon. I thought then how it would be nice to be able to ‘one day’ run along the same route.
So I finally got to do it, well, half the distance they did, but it didn’t disappoint…I loved it!!
15.7 miles in 2:37hrs. 101st out of 252. A great day out, and already thinking about doing it again next year. Maybe even the marathon?image
