Virtual fell Race – medium 1

Fell races Race Reports

The virtual fell series has moved into round 2, with the first of two medium courses (8 miles and 1800ft of ascent), selected by each runner over their local terrain. Once again the results are dominated by northern runners, from Keswick in particular, who no doubt wish to maintain their stranglehold on the team results (first men’s and women’s team).

Croft again failed to raise a full team, with Tim J squeezing his race in after completing Waun Fach the previous weekend. He completed his course in 1.30.05, as 17th MV50/59 out of 28 finishers, and 129th overall. So far (the hacking of Garmin has caused delays in submission of results), there have been 193 finishers. I succeeded this time in recording a time, and in more or less completing the course. I seem to be able to discover the amount of elevation only minutes after completing the run, so despite my efforts at calculating 1800′ using a map beforehand, I ended up 38ft short of the stipulated 1800ft. Probably in view of my age and technical incompetence, my result was allowed to stand: 149th (7th over 60, out of 13), in 1.35.54. My second attempt over a slightly different course, in a better time, left me over 100′ short. That leaves me eager to run the second medium fell race, and to prove to myself I can achieve the required height gain!

Maybe Jo and Flora will want to do the second medium fell?
