Wye Valley Runners resurrected a road race over the traditional 10 mile distance over a testing and hilly course. When the hills were mentioned at the presentation ceremony a female voice from the back of the room shouted out “Yeah, 13 of ‘em”. Not the recommended way to deal with hills. Run up them then forget them, I say, don’t store them numerically in your memory bank – therein lies the road to insanity and runners already have a head start in that department. The event also incorporated the Herefordshire County 10 Mile Championships which had not featured for many years.
This was also the 4th and penultimate race in the 2012 Croft Ambrey Club Championships and gave the club’s road runners a chance to express themselves. Only 6 brave club runners decided to test themselves. Stacey, still bedevilled by niggling injuries and unable to train properly, was motivated by the opportunity to extend his sequence of club championship victories. He surprised himself by finishing 7th in 64.25 and also took the silver medal in the senior men’s category in the county champs. Rob, revelling in every race he runs, was next home in a time of 72.38 (24th position) closely followed by the fast finishing Martin in 72.59 (26th). Frank trains regularly on the roads and performed well to record 79.55 (52nd) and take the race award for the first Over 55. Tom, ever the one to support Croft events, did wonder what he was doing and pounding the asphalt raised flashbacks of his days in the county’s highway department and he tried to divert his thoughts to his beloved fells far away. He finished in 84.58. Sam was apprehensive before the start, never having run a race over such a long distance. Her fears proved to be unfounded as she finished strongly in 92.16 (79th) and was duly rewarded with the silver medal for the veteran women in the county champs.
The race was won by Worcester A.C.’s Chris Wilson in 54.08. Chris won the Shobdon Wood Race 3 years ago and is the current course record holder.
